Official recognition for Redditch Sheds project from MP Rachel Maclean

A GROUP of Redditch woodworking and repair enthusiasts have received official recognition from town MP Rachel Maclean, writes Catherine Reston.

The MP visited the ‘Sheds’ group at their headquarters at the Old Needle Works in Britten Street last Friday to get an insight into what they do and the benefits of being together.

Roly Duke and Angela Booton started the Redditch Men in Sheds group in 2016 with the support of Age UK.

Men in Sheds is a concept which arrived from Australia and is for men – and women – over the aged of 55 to get together, forge friendships and make things.

However recently Age UK removed their funding from the project when the charity pulled out of the town.

That left the group, which has a loyal band of followers to carry on under their new ‘Community Shed’ name.

Roly has also removed the age restriction, so everyone is welcome to come down and join in.

“I’m even thinking about setting up sessions for young couples, maybe those who have recently bought their first home,” said Roly.

There is also the possibility of starting ‘Dads and Lads’ sessions following a successful bug-box-making with Holyoakes pupils.

“They were so chuffed to walk out with something they’ve made under their arm,” he said.

Currently the group meets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with a view to having evening sessions in the future.

Mrs Maclean said too many people suffered from loneliness and everyone should play their part in helping identifying someone affected.

“There is plenty going on here in Redditch to help tackle this issue and that’s why I was delighted to visit the Community Sheds project.

“It was inspiring to see first-hand what the brilliant volunteers are doing to combat loneliness in our town.

“They really are helping to improve people’s health and wellbeing.

“As I‘ve said, we must all play our part in identifying anyone who is lonely, and I would encourage residents to let their friends, family and neighbours know about this wonderful project.”
