Ollie Sellers' family have their say after killer driver jailed

Redditch Editorial 7th May, 2019   0

THE woman responsible for killing popular Redditch teenager Ollie Sellers through careless driving has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

Ollie Sellers’ dad, Paul, said: “Raeqa Liaqat has never shown any remorse for her actions and tried every trick in the book to get away with killing Ollie.

“She still has a life but we have lost Ollie forever.

“We are pleased and relieved with the custodial sentence and the three years driving ban – but we are still disappointed that despite conclusive evidence of Liaqat using her phone while driving, the jury returned a ‘death by careless driving’ verdict instead of a ‘death by dangerous driving’ one.

“This is not a deterrent – our lives have been changed forever. She’s got what she deserves but has got away with this lightly.

“We hope now that she’s sat in her prison cell, she can finally understand the impact of what she has done.”

Other Road resident Liaqat was given the sentence by Judge Jim Tindal at Hereford Crown Court on Friday, May 3.

19-year-old Ollie Sellers died on May 27, 2017 following a crash on the A4023 Coventry Highway in Redditch.

Ollie’s black Audi was hit by a red Seat driven by Liaqat as she was coming from the opposite direction.

Liaqat, who plead not guilty during a five day trial, lost control of the car before crossing the central embankment in the middle of the highway.
