Online booking system plan to prevent recycling centre jams

Redditch Editorial 11th May, 2020   0

BURTON Farm Recycling Centre, which serves Alcester and Studley, is to re-open to the public from Monday, May 18 – with an online booking system to prevent traffic build-up.

It follows growing pressure from central government and local authorities for Warwickshire County Council to end the closures on its public tips.

Government guidance advises that centres should only be used where essential; if possible, waste should either be stored safely at home or put with kerbside collections.

And staff will be hoping there aren’t scenes like in Birmingham over the VE Day weekend which saw massive queues at its recycling centres.

To do so the County Council is finalising an online booking service which will have to be used to book a slot at a centre before turning up.

Three of the County’s smaller recycling centres at Stockton, Wellesbourne and Shipston will remain closed for the time being.

Councillor Heather Timms, portfolio holder for environment and heritage and culture, said: “We have been acutely aware that residents want to get to our recycling centres so we are delighted at the revised guidance from Government.

“Reopening on May 18 is a huge step towards resuming something approaching a normal service. When this happens, I ask that customers are patient and show kindness and respect to each other and staff.”
