Opening the window on policing in Redditch

Redditch Editorial 21st Oct, 2016   0

A BRAND new campaign to show the public exactly what the police in Redditch actually do is set to launch in Redditch next week (October 28)
Each day, on average, West Mercia Police responds to 199 recorded crimes including 63 violent crimes, 8 sexual offences, 21 burglary offences, 15 vehicle crimes, 5 theft offences, 17 shoplifting offences, 26 criminal damage and arson offences, 8 drug offences and 8 public order offences.
However, Protect 2016 aims to help people fully understand how the police operate and what they do to keep people in the area safe.
Starting next Friday (October 28), for 10 days, West Mercia Police will be showcasing their work, from the execution of arrest warrants to web chats with senior officers and crime prevention events, the full spectrum of modern-day policing will be on show.

Deputy Chief Constable Chris Singer said: “Police themed movies and television documentaries might give a very exciting and dramatic picture of the role of the police but they rarely show the actual variety of work that your police service carry out each and every day.
“Protect 2016 is our chance to show you that when it comes to keeping you safe – it’s not just about uniformed officers catching criminals and putting them behind bars.
“The activities we will be carrying out are simply those that we do each and every day. The only difference is that we will be working to highlight them and shed a light on the kinds of challenges police officers and police staff face on a daily basis.
“We hope this will help local people develop an understanding of what we do all day, every day, to protect them from harm.”
A 24-hour “Tweetathon”, will kick off the campaign, and starting at 7am on Friday (October 28) both Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police will be tweeting an outline of every single report made to both forces via 999 and 101. The aim is to demonstrate the variety of calls received and show that many may not be what people would expect.
