THE OUTGOING Mayor of Redditch has written a love letter to the town, reflecting on her year in office.
Coun Juma Begum was the first British Bangladeshi female Mayor of Redditch.
Over the past year, she has represented the town during Remembrance Day, VE Day and a multi-faith Iftar gathering.
Coun Begum said: “One particularly poignant moment was being part of the grand opening of the Your Ideas Youth Project in Woodrow.
“Witnessing the dedication to empowering young people and creating safe, creative spaces for them to thrive was truly inspiring.
“It reminded me how essential it is to invest in our youth, who represent both the present and the future of our town.”
Coun Begum’s chosen charities were Disability Support Project and Primrose Hospice, and she raised £4,362 for their causes.
She added: “Each experience has reaffirmed my belief that Redditch is a place of compassion, resilience, and togetherness.
“I extend my deepest thanks to all who supported my charity efforts, stood by me in my mayoral duties and helped make this year so memorable.
“To my family and friends who travelled from across the country, and to my fellow Labour councillors – thank you for your unwavering support and encouragement.
“To the 37th Signal Regiment, the Redditch Royal British Legion and our wonderfully diverse community – you have all played a part in making this year unforgettable.
“Together, we have shown that far more unites us than divides us.
“I will continue to stand firmly against hate and be a voice for inclusion, respect, and unity.
“Thank you, Redditch, for embracing me with such warmth and trust as your Mayor.
“I am truly honoured and forever grateful.”
