GLORIOUS spring sunshine helped draw out the crowds in Alcester to watch young and old have a flippin’ good time at the annual pancake races.

An impressive 175 children took part as well as teams representing local businesses and pubs such as The Turks Head who were crowned pub relay champions.

Students from Alcester Grammar School made a welcome return after 10 years competing in their own inter-house relay race while eight competitors joined in a run for people with additional needs.

The business category was won by CAB studios, despite a valiant effort by race sponsors Hemming and Peace funeral directors.

The races have been organised by the court leet in Alcester for six decades.

Spokesperson Marc Venables, said: “The event is definitely the court’s and my personal favourite and it’s all down to the children.

“I’ve watched toddlers race and grow up into university students. They’ve all said they remember the pancake races.”

High Bailiff Tracy Parkes added: “The High Street was full of spectators encouraging the racers and we had great support from the local pubs and businesses, and children aged from three years old up to high school pupils.

“I would like to thank our sponsors and Alcester Court Leet for hosting this event as without their help and support it wouldn’t be as successful as it is.”
