PCC's cash boost buoys Redditch Self Defence's knife crime drive

REDDITCH Self Defence is celebrating celebrating after being awarded a £2,000 grant from West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion.

Fully supported by both Redditch and Bromsgove Police the organisation runs a series of anti knife crime projects with young people and as well as providing diversionary activities.

Pete Martin, who set up Redditch Self Defence, said: “We are grateful for the continued support of our local policing teams and will continue to fight knife crime and county line activities.”

County Lines is where illegal drugs are transported from one area to another, often across police and local authority boundaries (although not exclusively), usually by children or vulnerable people who are coerced into it by gangs.

The news of the grant boost follows Pete receiving an ‘Unsung Hero’ award from the High Sheriff of Worcestershire earlier this year.

Because of the growing need for positive activites for young people in Redditch the group has agreed to move to a larger venue run by Ringside Boxing in Matchborourgh centre.

“With our new bigger home and the help of Ringside Boxing we will be able to help even more young people,” said Pete..

The venue was re-opened with the help of Redditch Bourgh Council and will provide activities for the whole community.

Redditch Self Defence and Ringside Boxing will be hosting an official open day on Saturday, October 2, between midday and 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and meet the team and try some of the activities.

Among its programmes Redditch Self Defence plans to hold free weekly classes for young people.
