A PENSIONER who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer was savagely attacked on his way home from the White Hart Inn on Saturday, February 1.

Malcolm Wheeler was walking down Birchfield Road with his son Richard after the pair had bonded over a pint at the Evesham Road pub.

The Feckenham Road residents were walking near to The Seven Stars when they were attacked by a man who shouted ‘what are you looking at?’ at the unsuspecting victims.

Malcolm, aged 65, believes he blacked out during the attack which left him with serious facial injuries and a broken right arm.

He is currently waiting to see if he needs to undergo surgery.

“My son has a huge mark on the side of his neck too,” said Malcolm.

“Neither of us can really remember what happened because it was over so quickly.

“I remember a group of people coming towards us and the male in the group began shouting at us and became very aggressive.

“He punched me and knocked me to the ground.

“The next thing I remember is being helped up to my feet by two police officers.”

Councillor Roger Bennett has offered a reward to anyone who provides information leading to the conviction of the attacker.

The former Mayor of Redditch, who has played darts with Malcolm for years, said: “This is a serious attack on an innocent man walking home after a quiet night out.

“It is in everyone’s interest to bring the offender or offenders to justice.

“Anyone who can assist the police should contact them immediately, no matter how insignificant they feel their information may be.”

Police have confirmed they are investigating the assault and are looking at CCTV in the area.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting reference number 0146S 010220.
