Peshwar Massacre survivor Ahmad Nawaz visits Woodfield Academy

STAFF and pupils at Woodfield Academy welcomed an 18-year-old terror attack victim to their school last week to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Peace and education activist Ahmad Nawaz spoke about the time he survived a devastating Taliban attack, known as the Peshwar Massacre, at his school in December 2014.

Ahmad suffered terrible injures and could only watch on as his younger brother was murdered in front of his eyes.

After fleeing Pakistan, Ahmad was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and since then has campaigned tirelessly against extremism.

Woodfield teacher Helen Parry said: “Ahmad’s story is very inspiring and I hope the children realise the value of their education in spreading peace.”

Ahmad has received two honours for his work – A Point of Light Award and an Honorary Citizen’s medal – with Prime Minister Theresa May congratulating him for both.

Later on Year 6 pupils were asked to discuss their views on terrorism and how it can be prevented during interviews with the BBC.

The event was part of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Trust commemoration, the theme being ‘Torn Away From Home’.
