Petition drive to make sure town keeps its outdoor market

A CAMPAIGN to make sure Redditch doesn’t lose its outdoor market is gaining hundreds of backers.

Headless Cross senior citizen started a petition back in May at the Mason Road post office and has been overwhelmed by the support its received.

“I have been told the traders are happy in the town centre unit but what if the town centre management needs the unit?” she said.

“Councillors ask for our vote in return for representing our interests and opinions.

“Is it not time for more public consultation on matters which affect the whole town – and not just on social media which many hundreds of people don’t use or trust?”

Mrs Morley said she took action when the borough council decided against renewing its contract with market managers Sketts.

With the market area then due for re-paving by Worcestershire County Council, she feared the market might never return.

At the time Council Leader Councillor Matt Dormer said he would find a new home for the market and the general manager of the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, Ken Williams, offered the traders the use of one of his vacant units.

However that hasn’t allayed Mrs Morley’s fears who says she won’t be satisfied until Redditch market is restored to its rightful place.

Her petition is still active and can be found at Mason Road post office.
