Petition to make Alcester's St Faith's Road safer for schoolchildren gains traction

Redditch Editorial 29th Oct, 2018   0

A PETITION started by residents to get Alcester’s St Faith’s Road regularly gritted has recently gained traction.

It was launched in a bid to ensure the safety of Alcester’s schoolchildren throughout the winter months.

The petition was started on change.org by Alcester Mayor Coun Andrew Foster.

Coun Foster argued the exclusion of St Faith’s Road in Alcester from Warwickshire County Council Highways’ list of primary routes for gritting endangered the safety of the more than 600 youngsters.

The petition now has over 300 signatures and aims to convince County Hall to add the street to its list of precautionary routes as winter approaches.

Campaigners said they were concerned if nothing was done there could be a ‘serious accident’.

In response to the petition, a county spokesperson said school and bus routes did not form part of its winter gritting network, however grit bins had been positioned near the school for members of the public to use.

The council added that, during the prolonged cold spell last winter, St Faith’s Road was gritted when resources were available.

The petition can be found by searching on change.org for ‘Include St Faith’s Road, Alcester as a route for gritters’.
