PLAYERS at Studley Entaco Bowls Club are celebrating its 70th birthday.

Founded in 1949, the club attracts players from the end of April until the end of September on a grass ‘green’ within the boundaries of Studley Sports & Social Club.

Its name is an acronym from previous ownership by English Needle and Tackle Company.

“We have a mixed membership and pride ourselves as being a friendly, sociable club, who play in two local leagues and have many friendly matches with local clubs, both home and away,” said keen member George Kenneth.

Bowling is a very traditional English sport stretching back more than 700 years.

“The story goes that Sir Frances Drake, having noted the adverse weather conditions, was able to finish his game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe before going off to take on the Spanish Armada in 1588,” said George.

“Bowls is fun and offers a healthier and more active lifestyle – it is a low-risk sport suitable for all regardless of age, sex or physical ability.

“It helps you maintain stamina, strength, flexibility and balance.

“And of course the social inter-action with fellow members and visitors from other clubs keeps the mind healthy.”

The club is at the Entaco off Eldorado Close with club sessions on Tuesdays from 2-4pm and Thursdays from 6-8pm or join them at their open day on Sunday, May 19 from 10am to 4pm.

“All we ask is that you wear flat-soled shoes – the club has the bowls for you to use,” said George.
