POLICE in Redditch are appealing for witnesses following a racially aggravated assault on Friday (August 18).
The incident happened between 4.50am and 5.10am when a man in his 60s was walking up Melbury Way, Church Hill in the direction of the YMCA.
An unknown man is reported to have approached the victim, shouting and asking for money, at which point the victim has stated he does not speak fluent English and did not understand.
The offender is reported to have racially abused the victim, before punching him and causing the man to fall to the floor.
While on the floor, the victim was kicked several times, causing serious facial injuries that needed hospital treatment.
The offender is believed to have been picked up by an unknown small, white vehicle and left the scene in the direction of Rickyard Lane.
He is described as a tall, black man with short hair, slim build and around 25-years-old.
PC Penny Hatton said: “This was a particularly nasty and unprovoked assault that has caused serious injuries to the victim and left them understandably shaken.
“We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed anything to do with this incident, especially anybody with information on the suspect or vehicle used to leave the area.
“If you have any details to pass on, please call 101 and ask for myself, quoting incident number 468s of 18 August.”
Alternatively, if you do not feel comfortable speaking directly to the police then you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
