POLICE have confirmed they are investigating incidents of vandalism which happened during the FA Cup football match between Alvechurch FC and Worksop Town on Saturday.

More than 20 cars were ‘keyed’ between 3pm and 5pm with repair bills running into several thousands of pounds.

Bromsgrove and Redditch Safer Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Field said: “This type of crime is unusual for Alvechurch and I’d like to reassure the community that we are working hard to identify the offenders.”

He added the investigation was ongoing, house-to-house enquiries were being carried out and CCTV footage was being reviewed.

“We are also working closely with both clubs.”

Alvechurch chairman Richard Thorndike said: “It was devastating to hear about the car keying incidents which took place during the recent FA Cup match.

“As a club, we work so hard to attract new fans to Lye Meadow and it therefore leaves a sour taste for you to leave the match with car repairs to pay for during these already testing times.”

He labelled it a ‘nonsensical, vindictive and cowardly crime’ and said, as there had been some significant witness statements so far and a very small timeline for when the crimes took place established, he was hopeful good progress would be made in the coming days.

“As a club, we pride ourselves on being family friendly and always wish to welcome visitors to Lye Meadow so we’re not entirely sure how far this has pushed us back with our endeavours.

“Rest assured, along with the police, we will be making every effort to find the perpetrator/s and in future, when cars are parked on the road, we will enlist help from an external security company to make sure our fan’s property is safe.”

Insp Field has urged witnesses, anyone with information on the incidents or anyone with doorbell or dash cam footage to submit it here or provide details by calling police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
