Police issue apology over failure to act on shoplifting evidence

POLICE have apologised to a Studley shop manager after her store was targeted by shoplifters.

Keeley Fullard of the Nisa convenience store in the High Street supplied police with CCTV images and after an appeal, names and addresses of some of the suspects, who were living in Redditch.

But instead of acting, she says an officer from Warwickshire Police told her they could do nothing unless a member of her staff had been injured by the thieves.

“I couldn’t believe it – we had supplied them with pictures and through social media even names and addresses and they still did nothing,” said Keeley.

The spate of shoplifting began a week last Friday when one a young man came in, asked for some cleaning solution and then proceeded to fill a basket full of goods before running off without paying.

The theft was reported to the police and a crime number was issued. The following day the shop was targeted again.

“We were issued with another crime number but I got pictures off the CCTV and put them out on social media,” said Keeley, who promptly banned them from the store.

“We were then told where they were staying, names, addresses, even the car registration number, all of which was passed to the police.”

In all the police issued four crime numbers for the thefts but that didn’t stop the thieves from continuing to walk in and steal.

In one incident staff ended up struggling with a shoplifter as he tried to walk out with a case of beer, prompting a 999 call.

A police spokesperson said: “We are sorry the victim is disappointed with the level of service they have received from the force.

“A member of the local Safer Neighbourhood Team will be making contact with them to discuss their concerns.”
