Police ready to install average speed cameras on busy main road

Redditch Editorial 13th Jun, 2022   0

WORK is due to start on installing an average speed enforcement cameras on the A435 in Studley.

The road is one of four in Warwickshire where cameras will be installed with the aim of making the county’s roads safer and to reduce speeding.

The stretch of road affected will be from Studley Cricket Club, just before the bridge over the River Arrow, heading south to the junction with the A422 Inkberrow / Worcester road at Arrow.

The work is due to commence on Monday, June 20.

In the weeks that follow, average speed enforcement cameras will also be installed at three other locations, A446 from the junction with the A38, to the junction with the A4091, A426 From M6 Junction 1, to the junction with the A5, and the A428 from the junction with the A46, through Binley Woods village.

The routes have been chosen because of a high number of injury collisions caused by excessive speeds.

In all, over a five year period, 129 personal injury collisions have occurred along these routes.

The full suite of cameras, which will be operated by the police, are expected to be fully up and running by December.

In Warwickshire, between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020, a total of 39 people were killed and 285 seriously injured in collisions where speed and/or loss of control was recorded as a contributory factor.

During 2020, despite the lockdown periods when roads were quieter, 14 people lost their lives in Warwickshire as the result of a road traffic collision.

Another 228 people suffered serious, often life changing injuries.

Research shows that average speed enforcement cameras are an effective way at helping reduce vehicle speeds and improving driver behaviour.

Analysis found that on average, the number of fatal and serious collisions decreases by 36 per cent after average speed cameras are introduced, while personal injury collisions of all severities are reduced by 16 per cent.
