Pop-up gazebos, music and more for new-look Redditch market

MUSIC, entertainment and much more are promised come February 14 when Redditch market is re-launched under the management of Stratford-based EG Skett & Co.

The aim is to breath new life into a borough fixture which has been steadily shrinking over the past few decades.

“It’s going to be fantastic – we will be starting with the current stalls but we’ll soon be bringing in pop-up gazebos and some added flavour to the market,” said the company’s Aby Skett.

The family firm, in business for 60 years, has widespread experience and currently runs markets across the Midlands including Kidderminster, Cannock Chase and Banbury as well as a number of fine foods and farmers markets.

The intention is to keep Redditch market as a five day affair with the gazebos, due to arrive in early April, totally changing the look of the site.

“Our aim is to create more of an atmosphere with more themed days, like St George’s Day, to bring more excitement to what’s on offer,” said Ms Skett.

Councillor Greg Chance (Lab, Central) whose portfiolio covers Economic Development, said: “The market is an important part of our town centre and we want to create an even bigger and better one, which offers more diverse events, to complement the work we already do.”

Lyndsey Berry from Redditch Town Centre Partnership said: “It’s fantastic for Redditch and they will bring a lot to the town centre and the market and we are happy to work with them to make sure the town gets the best out of it.

Chris Sutton, manager of Redditch market traders, added: “They seem a fair company and as a committee we will work with them as best we can to create a successful and vibrant market.”

Last year Redditch borough council put the market contract out to tender with the competitive process being won by Sketts.
