Pubs could stay open longer if England reach latter stages of Euro's in 2024

PUBS and bars could stay open later if British nations reach the latter stages of the European Football Championship’s in 2024.

Similar to when England reached the finals of Euro 2020, pubs would automatically have their license extended from 11pm until 1am if the Three Lions’ success continues at next year’s tournament in Germany.

The plans, open for public consultation for the next 12 weeks, have been put forward by the governments new home secretary, James Cleverly who has the power to extend licensing hours for occasions of “exceptional international, national or local significance”.

James Cleverly said: “There are few things that bring a country together more than the prospect of winning an international tournament.

“England and Scotland are on their way to Germany and Wales are still in with a shot of qualifying, so it is only right we put in place plans to support them and our hospitality industry.

“That is why we are looking at helping pubs and bars stay open longer if we reach the semi-finals or final, and ensure families, friends and communities can come together to cheer their nation on.”

If the proposals go ahead, British nations would need to reach at least the semi finals of the Euro 2024 tournament.

National government will take into account the views from the public, licensing authorities and the hospitality industry during the consultation.
