AS PART of the Government’s new Pharmacy First scheme, community pharmacists can now provide direct treatment for a range of illnesses including sinusitis, shingles, throat, ear, skin and urinary tract infections.
The new service offers an alternative to a doctor’s appointment or A&E visit.
Pharmacies have long been offering a wide range of medical treatments and assessments, from vaccinations to blood pressure monitoring, so this new scheme will further complement the service.
Redditch MP Rachel Maclean and Redditch Borough Council Leader Matt Dormer, visited Knights Pharmacy to see how staff there were helping the community.
Mrs Maclean said: “The pharmacy is an incredibly valuable resource to our local community.
“Pharmacists have a wealth of knowledge and professional experience, they are highly trained and are recognised as a vital part of our NHS.
“As the daughter of a GP, I know only too well the pressures faced in the primary care sector and have long called for innovative and agile thinking.
“To be able to just drop into your local pharmacy, get quick and accessible treatment, no appointment required – that is great news for everyone.”
Coun Dormer added: “The flexibility of being able to go to your local pharmacy and get medical treatment is a massive boost for everyone, will save time, and offers a genuine alternative to a GP or A&E department.’”
