Rallying call to get involved with the Standard-backed Redditch In Bloom

COMMUNITY groups, businesses, schools and individuals are being encouraged to get gardening and brighten up the borough for Redditch in Bloom.

Organised by Redditch Loves, the competition, which has not run since 2013, is free to enter and has nine categories ranging from best individual planter to residential garden. Other categories include best business display.

For the under 16s there is a sunflower growing competition and residents are also being asked to nominate their favourite tree in Redditch. Young green fingered participants can pick up free sunflower seeds from the Redditch Standard office in Church Green East.

Everyone who enters will receive a certificate and there will be a rosette for second and third placing in each category. Winners will get a rosette and voucher.

Redditch Loves is a community interest company set up in 2023 by Karen Poulter, Sue Yeng and Joanna Bussey to organise events for the community.

Joanna told the Standard they decided to resurrect Redditch in Bloom as they felt ‘people’s spirits needed lifting’.

She added: “We want people to have pride in where they live and come together as a community.”

The trio also hope the competition will inspire the next generation to start looking after their town and not to drop litter.”

Redditch In Bloom – The Categories

All entry forms must be received by July 30 with judging taking place throughout August.

Photographs of favourite trees need to be in by July 20 and tallest sunflower details to reach the organisers by September 7. The winners will be announced in the October awards ceremony.

Participants can get an entry form by emailing [email protected] or calling 07528 695470.

Competition organisers are also keen to hear from anyone who wishes to sponsor the event.
