GEORGIAN houses, Redditch’s farming heritage and Feckenham’s brush with engineering genius are just some of the articles in the latest edition of the much-anticipated ‘Feckenham Forester’.
Edited by renowned local historian Richard Churchley with lots of contributions from experts near and far, the ‘Forester’ is a mine of information focusing on the history of Redditch, Feckenham, Inkberrow and the surrounding area.
Richard said: “The stories are all good but my favourite is probably one that I co-wrote with an Australian researcher about three local lads who were transported to Australia in 1818 for sheepstealing.
“They ended up being farmers themselves with hundreds of Australian acres and many head of livestock.”
It’s a story to send shivers down the spine at the justice system of yesteryear; three men sentenced to death for stealing nine sheep in 1818, the sentence being commuted to transportation to New South Wales for life.
