SPORTING facilities in Redditch and Bromsgrove are urged to sign up as official training venues for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

It provides a golden opportunity for local facilities to raise their profiles while giving an economic boost to their respective towns.

Organisers are looking for training venues specialising in either boxing, athletics, women’s cricket, hockey, netball, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, swimming or triathlon.

They will be expected to host thousands of athletes leading up to and during the tournament, which runs from July 18 to August 10 in two years’ time.

Venues can apply to host one or several sports but there is a specific criteria which facilities must meet to be eligible.

World number five squash player Sarah-Jane Perry is a member of the Birmingham 2022 Athletes’ Advisory Committee.

She said: “Any elite athlete will tell you that good preparation is the key to success at a major championships.

“Having the right training facilities during Birmingham 2022 is really important.

“State-of-the-art training facilities gives athletes the confidence that they can perform to the best of their ability and I can’t wait to be competing for gold on home soil at the tournament.”

The deadline for applications is September 30, 2020.
