Redditch bikers pay a poignant visit to First World War cemeteries

REDDITCH Advanced Motorcyclists Group have recently returned from a commemorative trip to the battlefields of the First World War.

The team visited many monuments in The Somme campaign, including Thiepval, Lochnagar Crater, Fricourt German Cemetery, Scott’s Piper Memorial, and the Sheffield Pal’s Trenches.

They then moved on to Ypres to pay respects at the largest Commonwealth War Grave on the Western Front at Tyne-Cot.

The country is currently remembering the fallen of the Third Battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, which started on July 31, 100 years ago this week.

The riders also placed their own personal Poppy Crosses at Essex Farm Cemetery where Major John McCrae wrote the famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.

A spokesperson said: “Probably the most thought provoking and poignant of all was the ‘shot at dawn post’ in Poperinge where British soldiers were shot by their own side, some for the most trivial of reasons, others who were suffering from shell shock and couldn’t have known what they were doing.

“RAMG organised the trip as a mark of respect to those soldiers, many young lads who paid the ultimate sacrifice for today’s freedom.”
