Redditch Blues' plea for return of stolen flag ahead of Euro 2024

AN ENGLAND flag belonging to the Redditch Blues has still not been found according to the group’s organiser.

The nine-year-old prized possession of the branch of the town’s Official Birmingham City Supporters Club went missing last Friday at the Iceland game at Wembley.

According to Lynda Courts, who runs the club, the 2.5m by 1.5m standard disappeared during the game and was not tied to the railings when she returned to pick it up after the 1-0 defeat.

She appealed for it to be handed in ‘anonymously’ but has so far not had any response.

A company has offered to replace it but there is not enough time to get a new one as the retired maths teacher had been hoping to take the flag to Germany for the Euros which start today (Friday).

It was originally bought after members of the supporters club started watching England at home and away. The only occasion when it was not on display was when the club were told they could not bring it into the stadium.

She told the Standard: “The flag has been to every England game apart from one since we got it.

“We couldn’t believe when it was gone – nothing like this has ever happened before.

“There’s an etiquette between England fans that you don’t take or touch other supporters’ flags.

“There may be occasions when you have to move them along slightly to fit yours in, but you always make sure their flags are 100 per cent visible.”

Mrs Courts has been informed by Wembley staff they are reviewing CCTV in a bid to find out who took it.

“It could be anywhere in the country – I doubt it has been taken by anyone from Redditch.

“We just want it back – whoever has it can hand it in at a police station.”

Mrs Courts has been running the club since 2009 which organises coaches and tickets to all Birmingham City games.

It has around 250 members which come from Redditch, Bromsgrove, Solihull, Droitwich and Alcester.

A group of nine members from the Redditch Blues are heading out to Germany with England’s first game against Serbia kicking off at 8pm on Sunday, June 16.

Mrs Courts added: “We will be out for the duration of the tournament – until England get knocked out or, hopefully, win it.”
