THOUSANDS of meals were handed out to vulnerable people last month, thanks to a Redditch company.
Working in partnership with food redistribution charity City Harvest London, Oakland International helped provide 12,172 meals and helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 23 tonnes.
Oakland International’s contribution in June of 5.1 tonnes of surplus food, which might have otherwise gone to waste, was instead redistributed by City Harvest to provide nourishment for hundreds of thousands of individuals who could not obtain or afford healthy meals.
Last year Oakland International donated a total of 149,253kg of food, which then provided 355,364 meals and averted 472,515kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
Oakland Group sustainability and ESG manager, Doyin Adeleye, said: “We look forward to deepening our collaboration with City Harvest, as our partnership is key to us achieving our Net Zero goals and our wider sustainability ambitions.”
City Harvest rescue food from across the UK supply chain.
They currently redistribute 1.2million meals a month free of charge to more than 375 charities across London and beyond for people experiencing food insecurity.
They work with schools, food banks, community kitchens, soup kitchens and family centres.
City Harvest food sourcing manager, Goldie Leoppky, said: “City Harvest is delighted to be working with Oakland International to redistribute their quality surplus food and ensure it quickly and safely gets to City Harvest’s network of community partners to feed people in need.
“I’m excited to continue building the partnership to rescue more food and feed more people at a time when malnutrition is so high due to the rising cost of food.”
