Redditch campaigner succeeds in getting diabetes in sport formally debated by govt

A CAMPAIGNER from Redditch has worked alongside the town’s MP to get diabetes in sport formally debated by the UK Government.

The debate is scheduled to take place in Westminster Hall on Tuesday September 3, and marks a major milestone in a months-long campaign spearheaded by MP Chris Bloore in partnership with international futsal player and diabetes advocate Chris Bright,  founder of The Diabetes Football Community.

The campaign shines a light on the lack of consistent government guidance, inclusive policies and adequate support for people living with diabetes who wish to take part in sport at any level –  from grassroots clubs to elite competition. Campaigners argue this gap in provision fuels stigma, exclusion and lower levels of participation.

Mr Bright said: “This is amazing news – we’ve never had a UK Government debate on diabetes in sport before.

“A lack of understanding, consistent policy and meaningful support has created huge barriers for people like me who live with diabetes.

“We’ve had to fight to be included, to be understood and to be taken seriously in sport.

“This debate is only the beginning. We need as many people as possible to get behind it.”

Mr Bloore added: “This is a huge moment for the diabetes community and for everyone who believes sport should be for all.

“People with diabetes face hidden barriers that most others don’t – from outdated perceptions to inadequate support and guidance. That’s simply not acceptable in 2025.

“I’m proud to be bringing this issue to Parliament in collaboration with my friend and former teammate Chris Bright – someone who grew up in Redditch, lives with diabetes himself and has shown remarkable leadership through his advocacy.

“Together, we’re calling for real change – but we need your voice too. Share your story and help us show the Government that this matters.”
