Redditch car thief gives false name to police

A DRIVER who stole his uncle’s car and crashed into a man on a skateboard tried to hide his identity from police, magistrates heard.

Ahmed Raza, of Millsborough Road, pleaded guilty at Redditch Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (May 17) to stealing the Honda Civic, driving without a licence and insurance AND giving a false name to the officers who attended the crash.

The 29-year-old drove the car through Salters Lane where he hit the skateboarder.

Mark Soper, prosecuting, said: “The following day he contacted the police himself to admit giving a false name.”

He told magistrates Raza was not at fault for the collision and had not been speeding.

Defence solicitor Julia Powell said: “He was driving at just 25mph and could not have prevented the accident, although it might not have happened if he had not taken the car without permission in the first place.”

Raza was given a community order for 12 months along with 80 hours of unpaid work. He was also fined £135 and ordered to pay £60 in prosecution costs.
