Redditch charity bids to bag Tesco grant boost

Redditch Editorial 8th Sep, 2017   0

REDDITCH charity Carers Careline is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork for its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores – awarded to local community projects.

Three worthy causes in this region have been shortlisted to receive the money and shoppers are invited to pop into Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Carers Careline is one of the groups on the shortlist.

The charity promotes the health and wellbeing, both physical and mental, of unpaid carers by providing support, advice, training, counselling, and encouraging friendship through coffee mornings, lunches, together, outings and groups.

Fiona Mitchell, from Carers Careline, said: “So often carers can feel lonely and forgotten and this is a great reminder that people do notice the huge task they do.

“A trip out, or a meeting with other carers can be such an encouragement and make a big difference. Thank you to everyone for your support.”

Voting is open in all Tesco stores throughout September and October. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Alec Brown, head of community at Tesco, said: “We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for September and October. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.”

Also vying for your vote is Great Alne & Kinwarton Memorial Hall which wants to create a Centenary Memorial Garden marking the 100th anniversary of the ending of the Great War in Great Alne.

The Friends of Rigby Hall in Bromsgrove who are fund-raising to provide a much needed playground suitable for children with learning disabilities.

Voting closes on October 31.
