A REDDITCH fish and chip shop have almost reached top ‘plaice’ in a national competition after being crowned the top shop in Worcestershire for the second year running.

The Golden Carp Chippy, named the best Worcestershire chip shop for the second year in a row, is one of the UK’s top 20 fish and chip shops in the 2018 National Fish & Chip Awards.

The shop in the Matchborough Centre owned by Theo Ellinas, must now battle against Oldswinford Fish & Chips in Stourbridge to become the Midlands’ best fish and chip shop and to secure a place in the next round.

Throughout September, Seafish appointed judges will visit the shops to complete mystery shopper assessments and the winning shop in the West Midlands region will then compete against nine others from around the UK for the ultimate accolade – Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award.

Golden Carp Chippy owner Theo said: “To be in the top 20 in the UK is really great – but the hard work isn’t over yet.

“It’s all about teamwork and making sure the customers and the team are getting the most out of the shop, because I think this really reflects in the overall experience.

“I also believe that our locally sourced, fresh produce make a big difference.”

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, said: “As the Midlands’ top shops go head-to-head to secure their place in the final, I’ll look forward to seeing who fry’s out on top.

“I would like to offer my congratulations to the shortlisted businesses and wish them the best of luck as they battle for the regional titles.”
