Redditch church appeals to community to help knit poppies for Remembrance Day

PEOPLE are being sought to knit, crochet and craft poppies for a Remembrance display at St Peter’s CE Church in Ipsley.

Church members, led by Sarah Sherwin, Helen Jervis and Judy Bainbridge, have launched a project to create a display of handmade poppies in the churchyard in time for Remembrance Sunday in November.

Since the project was started a few weeks ago, more than 1,000 poppies have already been made.

However, several thousand more are needed to ensure the display creates a significant impact.

Members of the local Women’s Institute which meets at the church have also got involved but there is an open invitation to the wider local community, including schools, to join in as well.

A simple pattern – aimed at beginner-level knitters and crocheters – is available.

The Monday afternoon craft group at St Peter’s would welcome anyone to join them.

For those not into knitting or crocheting, volunteers will be needed from mid-September to the end of October to sew the poppies together to help create the display ready for early November.

Any donations of knitting needles (size 4mm), crochet hooks or any red wool or black buttons (4-holed) would also be very much appreciated.

There is a box in the church foyer where donations or completed poppies can be left.
