Redditch climate strikers to mark one year of protests next Friday

REDDITCH climate strikers are getting set to mark one year of protests in Redditch next Friday, March 13 outside the Town Hall.

Since the action has started the local branch of YouthStrike4Climate has joined with youngsters and adults worldwide to bring home their message that Planet Earth is getting hotter.

Locally they’ve had an impact too – helping to raise the issue of declaring a climate emergency in the council chamber of the Town Hall and winning support from decision makers in Redditch.

“The determination of a handful of children to make a stand is good to see, and they have helped to make change start to happen in Redditch, but it feels painfully slow,” said Claire Davies, leader of the Green Party in Redditch.

“Time is definitely something we do not have on our side.

“I would like to say thank you to the children for making a stand, thank you to the other parents who have supported their children in attending, thank you to all those who have stopped, chatted with the children, and joined in with the protest, and thank you to the decision makers who are starting to listen.

“I know the children would like it if more could join in and amplify their voices. They will be outside the town hall on Friday the 13th from 10am to 2pm.

“Come and join them and demand a future that is free from the threat of runaway climate change.”

The YouthStrike4Climate action sprung from a UN report into climate change which estimated humankind had just 12 years to keep global temperature increases to within a ‘safe’ 1.5 degrees Celsius after which the planet could suffer severe droughts, floods, wildfires and more.

This February has been the wettest on record in England and Wales leading to widespread flooding across the Midlands.
