REDDITCH is going mad for hand sanitisers and protective masks sparked by fears of the coronavirus, writes Caprice Harrison.

As the number of confirmed cases in Britain hit 85 and the government raising the risk level from low to moderate, canny Redditch shoppers have been stocking up on hand sanitisers and even face masks – despite these having little effect – leading to huge shortages in the town.

In the Kingfisher Shopping Centre all shops had sold out of hand sanitisers except Boots which had only two bottles left at the price of £3 each.

Other retailers like Superdrug, Poundland and Wilkinsons were advising worried residents to buy from pharmacies or in bulk online.

One shopper said her child’s school had spent three hours trying to track down had sanitisers.

Selena Gill, pharmacist at Rowland’s Pharmacy on Church Green West said: “We ran out of hand sanitiser and masks around three weeks ago.

“We are trying to get more stock in, however there is a national shortage.

“We have had many locals come into the shop inquiring about the virus, which is the reason for the information from the NHS on the door.

“The only advice I can give is to wash hands in soapy water before touching your face and eating.”

Tips to prevent the spread of coronavirus include washing hands with soapy water, singing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice, to ensure hands are clean and free of germs.

Ms Gill, added: “Although, a hand sanitiser is convenient when ‘on the go’, soapy water is advised the majority of the time, if you have access to it.”

While, Coronavirus symptoms overlap with many other illnesses, it is vital to know the signs of of the virus are similar to a chest infection. With, a cough, a high temperature and shortness of breath.

If these symptoms persist, it is advised to seek medical advice through the NHS 111 service rather than going to your local doctor or hospital.
