Redditch club meeting up to say a golden farewell

MEMBERS of a popular Redditch social club have met up for the very last time after their leader of 30 years retired.

The Headless Cross Golden Age Club has been run by Lillian Sutor for the past 30 years but she has decided that now is the time to step down, and with no one available to take over, the club will be closing just shy of its 50th birthday.

“It is a great shame no one else wants to take on the running of the Golden Age Club, because it means so much to so many,” said Lillian.

“We have tried very hard to find way to keep the club going, but without a volunteer, it just isn’t possible.”

The club’s Christmas party at the White Hart to celebrate their last ever gathering on Tuesday (December 12) was a bittersweet occasion and a letter was read out thanking Lillian for her years of effort and she was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a gift.

There then followed gifts from Santa, a raffle and live music, and an opportunity to reflect upon what the club means to its members.

June Wells, who has been coming to the club for around 10 years said: “We will all be very sad to see the club disappear.

“We enjoy meeting up and the organised trips mean we get to see places we would never be able to otherwise.

“We’re very grateful to Lilian and all her hard work over the years and I know we are all going to miss it a lot.”

Dorothy Baylis, who has been a member of the club for almost 20 years, added: “Today is a very bittersweet occasion. I’ve made some good friends here and the club provides companionship and company for a lot of us. We are sad to see it go.”
