AN afternoon of family fun in Studley to raise awareness of bowel cancer has been hailed a success.
On Bank Holiday Monday, the event at Studley Leisure Centre raised £500 as part of a campaign to support Redditch man George Hands, who was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of just 24.
With a roaming magician, a candy stall, sponsored waxing station, bouncy castle and raffles guests were kept entertained as they helped the worthy cause, with all proceeds going towards to grand total.
George’s fiancé, Claire Vipond said: “It was amazing. We had such a great turn out and having all our activities based indoors meant the wet weather didn’t deter people at all.
“We didn’t expect to raise quite so much, so we’re really pleased.”
Claire also did a sponsored skydive at the weekend and the JustGiving page for George has reached more than £8,000.
George was diagnosed with bowel cancer after 12 months of going backwards and forward to the doctor and he was admitted to hospital at the beginning of March when doctors found a large cancerous tumour.
His family are now spreading the word to young people to be vigilant and his partner Claire added: “Just because of your age, you should never brush off your concerns – you know your own body, so make sure the health professionals take your concerns seriously. It could make a huge difference to your health.”
