NEW Year’s Day was extra special for a Redditch couple who got engaged just hours after welcoming their first child into the world.

Sadie Watkins, aged 28, gave birth to Mia Gale Doherty at 12.23pm, on January 1, at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

With the support of her loving fiance Peter Doherty, aged 33, and the wonderful midwives and nurses, Sadie says she truly felt at ease.

The tiny bundle of joy, whose middle name is the same as Peter’s grandmother, weighed in at 8.1 pounds and is perfectly healthy.

“We’re absolutely over-the-moon,” said Sadie.

“It was also such an amazing surprise to have Peter propose so soon after giving birth to Mia.

“He got down on one knee in the Maternity Ward. It was the perfect way to start 2019.”

The Winyates couple decided to keep their Christmas schedule clear over the festive period because Mia was originally due on December 22.

Peter said: “She came late but it’s turned out well because we have started the New Year with her instead.

“We are immensely proud and can’t wait to get her home later this week.”

Before they are discharged, Sadie will undergo a few more blood tests.

In the meantime the couple have been visited by their parents who have all been extremely excited to meet their first grandchild.

Helen Gebison, senior clerk on the Maternity Ward, said: “It’s been an incredibly busy time of year.

“We want to wish all of the families who have been with us over the last few weeks the very best of luck in the future.”
