Redditch couple set to launch new nightclub event for people with disabilities

A REDDITCH couple are appealing for volunteers to help them launch a new nightclub event for people with disabilities.

Mount Pleasant residents Damian Sier and Louise Blunn, who both have autism, will launch the event known as – Skooby’s – at Steps Bar & Club, on Evesham Road, this month.

“There’s not really anything like this in Redditch,” said Damian who also goes by his DJ name ‘Fingers’, “we’re so passionate about it because we want people with disabilities to make new friends, have fun and not feel discriminated against.

“The first Skooby’s, which will be free entry, is on Monday, April 22, and following that it will run weekly.”

The pair say they are hopeful ‘kind local people’ will step forward and offer their services to make the launch a massive success.

“Just with little things really,” said Louise when asked how people can help, “Promoting Skooby’s, getting the name out there, spreading the word, printing leaflets and then, of course, handing them out.”

Councillor Pattie Hill has already thrown her weight behind the project, and so too have charities Amber Support and Speak Easy Now.

Coun Hill said: “I’m absolutely thrilled by the idea.

“Anything which allows adults with special needs to have a great time is more than welcome in this town – I’ll even have to join them on one of the nights.”

Skooby’s is mainly aimed at people living in Redditch, Bromsgrove and Studley who are aged 18 and over.

Steps Bar has wheelchair access and security will be on the door on launch night.
