Redditch couple in a spin over 55-year-old dryer

A HEADLESS Cross couple are in a spin over their tumble dryer which has stood the test of time over the last five decades while others have been blowing up and causing fires.

John Marsh, of Belmont Close and his wife Margaret bought the Parnell machine in 1961 from the Midlands Electricity Board in Redditch, where John used to work, and is amazed it is still running without a problem and has had very little repair work done to it in the last half a century.

The 80-year-old said: “I see it on the news all the time, dryers blowing up and causing big house fires and I just think it is amazing that ours is still ticking over after all this time.”

John has only ever had to replace the belt once on the machine and said ‘they simply don’t make them like they used to’.

He purchased the dryer when his daughter was 12 months old to help with the endless washing that comes with having a baby, after his friend in Droitwich praised them.

On average they sold for about £50 in the 60s compared to today where they range from £130 to more than £1,000.

“If they made them now like they did back then, you wouldn’t have all these problems.

“I don’t know why they don’t because it’s just been marvelous. It’s still ever so quiet as well.”

John has also dug out the old instruction manual for the dryer which he said said is also still in immaculate condition after all these years.
