Redditch couple still sparkling after 60 years of marriage

A REDDITCH couple are celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary this week, marking 60 years of marriage.

James Brendan McGahan, known as Brendan and Roberta McGahan, known as Bobbie, were married on August 24, 1957 and are enjoying their Diamond anniversary with their family.

The couple, who live in Headless Cross, have three children, eight grandchildren and a baby great-grandchild, all of whom will be joining them for a party this weekend.

Irish-born Brendan came to England in 1950, two years before being called up for national service. It was after he was demobbed that he literally ran into Bobbie in Redditch.

The pair met in in 1955 when Brendan stepped off a bus on Unicorn Hill and bumped into Bobbie who was on her way to the bank where she worked. Nineteeen-year-old Bobbie was smitten with the 23 year-old gentleman and two years later, they were wed.

Sixty years on, the octogenarians still live in Redditch, with Brenden enjoying time in the garden and Bobbie regularly cooking up a storm for the family in the kitchen.

Bobbie said: “I’m not sure what the secret to a long marriage is, but I know that a good sense of humour is very important. Having good humour and patience has seen us both well.”

Their children, Rob, Ian and Cheryl said: “Mum and Dad are the heart of the family and they are a true inspiration of how to live your lives. They are devoted to each other and adore all of their family – they truly are the perfect couple.”
