Redditch crews' awesome effort set to boost charity’s coffers

TWO big hearted crews from Redditch will be ‘Racing the Dragon’ this Sunday in a bid to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Now.

Under the command of ‘Admiral’ Boon Yeng of Webheath, the two teams – 34 paddlers in total – will be striking out for the cause in the annual River Severn event hosted by Worcester Dragon Boat Racing Club.

And every penny they raise will be match-funded by Barclays Bank of Redditch up to the value of £1,000.

For Boon, as well as having a good time while raising money for a good cause, it’s personal too.

“Breast Cancer affects too many lives, unfortunately, and five years ago we lost our niece to it, at the very young age of 21,” he said.

“With advancements in technology and major medical breakthroughs, there is every likelihood that we can save countless lives by 2050 (Breast Cancer Now’s Mission). We can all do our bit to help.

“On July 2 our determined and honed crew will head to the river Severn at Worcester to compete with only one aim in mind…To Win… or get dunked into the water!”

Such has been the support for his efforts that Boon’s been able to assemble two crews, skippered by Tamsin Chik and Boon’s son Josh and they’ve been busy knocking their crews into shape.

“I’m getting very excited now…and also expectant. To try to organise all their diaries and co-ordinate the day has been a mammoth task – good thing we have extremely able first mates on board,” added Boon.

Race the Dragon is an annual dragon boat charity regatta which takes place this Sunday, July 2, by the racecourse, from 9am to 5.30pm.

It promises to be a spectacular spectator event with boats battling it out on the water.

Boon’s team will be easy to spot as they will be sporting pink Breast Cancer Care Now T-shirts.
