STAFF at a Redditch dog-care centre are celebrating after four of their volunteers decided to train some canines for their Kennel Club Bronze Citizen Award.
On Saturday (February 25) three student volunteers and one apprentice from Warwickshire College, took their assessment at the Lakeside Dog Day Care Centre and put their pooches through their paces for the Bronze Citizen Award.
The assessment involved different exercises including a one-minute stay task, a recall challenge and being able to walk using a loose lead, with participants required to pass each to be awarded the certificate.
The group have been coming to the centre off New Meadow Road and working with the animals for one day a week for the past four months, and while the dog care business run regular classes for owners to improve the behaviour and general manners of their dogs, it is the first time they have ever tried the training with volunteers in this way.
Co-ordinator Sharon Edwards said: “It went so well on Saturday and I am really proud of how hard everyone worked. The students all gained a lot from this experience and it is definitely something we will look at doing again int he future.
“It was a really great example of students and local businesses working together to achieve something positive.”
The training scheme aims to produce a dog that will walk and behave in a controlled manner and the courses run throughout the year at Lakeside and for more information or to book onto a training course, call 01527 503 414.
