Redditch drivers warned of closures as work starts on Spaghetti Junction

HIGHWAYS England is preparing to protect Spaghetti Junction with a £4.7m concrete repair scheme starting next month.

The ageing structure, located on the outskirts of Birmingham city centre, recently celebrated its 45th birthday and is used by 200,000 vehicles a day.

To ensure the road is protected for the future, Highways England is announcing the next phase of a major scheme which will see concrete repairs and the installation of new waterproofing material.

There will be seven full-weekend closures of junction 6 of the M6, associated slip roads and the A38(M) into and out of Birmingham, starting from Friday, July 7.

Project manager Jessica Kenny from Highways England said: “This vital repair work has been planned closely with Birmingham city council to ensure we minimise disruption.

“As the structure ages and the number of vehicles using the road have increased more maintenance is required.

“Unlike some motorways in England, large stretches of both the M5 and M6 in the Midlands are elevated and this means repair work is essential to protect the integrity of the structure.”

The work will be done during the summer months when the road is at its quietest with the M6 itself remaining fully open during the work.

Also included in the work will be new tarmac meaning motorists travelling on the A38(M) will benefit from an improved road surface.
