AS FOODBANKS continue to support high levels of people facing hunger and hardship this winter, Redditch Foodbank is urging shoppers to donate to this year’s Tesco Winter Food Collection.
From Thursday November 27 to Saturday November 29, customers at Tesco Extra in Oakenshaw will be encouraged to pick up an extra item or two as part of their weekly shop to drop in special donation trollies on the way out of store.
Last year, more than 2.9 million emergency food parcels were distributed by food banks in Trussell’s community, a 51 per cent increase over the past five years.
Anyone who makes a donation at the Tesco Winter Food Collection, will be helping ensure that Redditch Foodbank can continue to provide warm, compassionate, practical support and advice this winter.
Customers are being asked to donate essential items of long-life food such as tinned meat, long life milk, tinned fruit, microwave rice, mashed potato, and jams.
Emma Marshall, manager of Redditch Foodbank, is urging local people in across the borough to give generously.
Emma, said: “This winter is going to be difficult for many families in Redditch who are having to choose between heating and eating.
“Your donation will be put to good use helping others across our town. Having struggled financially myself in the past I know firsthand how important having access to food is.
“Thank you to Tesco and the generosity of its customers, it’s only due to your help and support that we will be able to continue to ensure no-one need go hungry this winter. Please give what you can, your support means everything”
Trussell, which supports more than 1,400 food banks across the UK, including Redditch Foodbank, says that last year 567,000 people accessed a food bank in the Trussell community for the first time.
The food bank says at the heart of its work is creating space to offer a cup of tea and a chat alongside providing practical support. As the need for support increases, finding the physical space and time to do this is becoming harder and harder.
