Redditch girl raising funds for a life-changing journey to Nepal

A REDDITCH girl is losing her locks to help fund a life-changing trip to Nepal where she will strive to teach young people about HIV prevention.

Shannon Thompson needs to raise at least £800 to fund her trip as part of the International Citizenship Scheme (ICS) and she is hoping to do so by having her long hair cut short.

In connection with charity Restless Development, Shannon will volunteer for 12 weeks, while staying with a host family in Nepal.

As well as teaching the youngsters about safe sex and the causes and effects of HIV, the volunteers will be teaching them how to write CVs and apply for jobs and even how to start their own business.

I was inspired to go on this placement because I wanted to change someone’s life as well as stretch myself and my skills by experiencing another culture,” said the 18 year-old.

“We will be going into schools and talking to the children about the causes and effects of HIV and how to prevent it. It could make a big difference to them.”

Shannon has already completed the National Citizenship Scheme (NCS) and is trying to raise the £800 so she can continue work to help others.

She added: “ I also believe it will be a great experience that will help me grow as a person and make me step out of my comfort zone.”

Shannon will be having her hair cut at Halo’s Hair Studio in Studley on September 8 and her hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which make wigs for children fighting cancer.
