Redditch girls building for a future in science, engineering and technology

GIRL power is being harnessed at a Redditch first school as girls are encouraged to get into engineering, science and technology.

With a special Science Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) day last Thursday (June 22) 19 students at Matchborough First School Academy welcomed an Operations Executive from Rolls Royce to their school as they learnt about robotics and engineering careers.

The Year 4 girls have been attending the Girl Power Club at the school – an after school project sponsored by Rolls Royce – where they could learn about STEM subjects and take part in activities including designing and making working clocks, making slime and using Lego WeDo.

As a grand finale to the 20 week-long project, the students gave a presentation to their parents, carers and members of Rolls Royce.

Club leaders Mrs Helen Buckland and Mrs Clare Barlow said: “It has been a huge success and the girls have really enjoyed every minute of it.”

Lat Friday (June 23) was International Women in Engineering Day, which annually aims to inspire more females to enter engineering careers.

A study by VEX Robotics found that many engineering careers are still perceived (particularly among parents) as ‘dirty and messy’ jobs and the male-dominated stereotype is a challenge that schools across the UK are trying to change.

Currently, female engineers make up just 9 per cent of the existing skilled engineer workforce and clubs like Girl Power at Matchborough aim to change perceptions about STEM careers making them accessible to all.
