Redditch Golf Club is first to tee off with Women and Girls Charter

Ross Crawford 26th Jul, 2020

REDDITCH Golf Club has become the first club in Worcestershire to achieve Women and Girls Charter status.

Set up by the R&A and England Golf, the charter is aimed at creating a more inclusive culture for women and girls within the sport.

Club members are now calling on everyone in golf to play their part in developing a culture that values women and girls involvement in every aspect of the sport.

The club has committed to increase the number of women and girls playing and working in golf and acknowledges for women to flourish throughout golf, there needs for a fundamental shift in culture.

It also recognises that there is clear ethical need for change while the potential economic benefits from growing the sport through more women and girls playing are substantial.

In addition the R&A – the Royal and Ancient at St Andrews – commits to playing a leading role in this process and to working with affiliates, partners and the wider golf industry towards achieving this goal.

Redditch Golf Club has also committed to making tangible efforts to develop a welcoming and inspiring environment for women and pledges to do more to attract women into golf, to remain and to have rewarding careers.

Jeremy Tomlinson, chief executive of England Golf said: “I was personally delighted to read the commitments that you have made as part of your contribution to the delivery of the Women and Girls Charter.

“Your hard work in widening the general appeal of golf is to be applauded, especially when it comes to developing opportunities for women and girls within your club and local community.

“Thank you to all those at Redditch Golf Club who have worked to implement the Women in Golf Charter.”

Kerry Alligan-Smith, general manager at the club, is the designated Charter Champion.

She said “ We have a vibrant Ladies section and they all provide support to the club and encourage ladies and girls to get into golf.

“For the club to be signed up to the Charter we are hoping to grow the sport within Worcestershire at all levels.”
