Redditch gym owner completes gruelling 78+ mile challenge to support late motorcycle racer’s family

A REDDITCH gym owner has raised more than £3,300 for the family of a client who lost his life while competing in a motorcycle race.

Dan Allen, co-owner of Athena Performance, covered an extraordinary 78.6miles by running just over 2.8miles every hour, on the hour, for 28 consecutive hours.

The number 28 is relevant as relevant as motorcycle racer Shane Richardson, raced under the number 28.

Dan began the challenge at midday tomorrow (Saturday June 13), setting out from Athena Performance near Redditch town centre. Each of his 28 runs followed a circular route beginning and ending at the gym.

The challenge was organised by Dan in memory of Shane, who tragically died following an accident at Oulton Park Circuit last year.

Dan created the event to honour Shane’s memory and provide financial support to the late rider’s partner and two children.

Over the course of the challenge, Dan completed 28 separate runs with only short periods between each lap to rest, refuel and prepare to set off again.

The total distance of 78.6 miles is equivalent to three full marathons.

Although Dan had to complete every lap himself, he was supported throughout the challenge by friends and members of the Athena Performance community.

Different runners joined him for individual laps, helping him to continue through the physical exhaustion, sleepless night and increasingly difficult final hours.

Dan said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated, shared the fundraiser, joined me for a lap or came down to support me.

“The challenge was incredibly difficult, but the support throughout the 28 hours made a massive difference.

“Most importantly, every donation will help support Shane’s family, which was the reason for doing this.”

The challenge has so far raised more than £3,300 through a combination of online and cash donations. The fundraising page remains open for anyone who would still like to contribute.
