Redditch History Society back with their illustrated talks

REDDITCH History Society continues its season of local and national history talking with a presentation on surgery in the 19th century from 2pm to 4pm on Monday, June 9, at the Oasis Christian Centre.

The presentation is by Louise Robinson, a volunteer at the George Marshall Medical Museum in Worcester, who is making a welcome return visit to the society following her fascinating talk last year on Phrenology and Death Masks.

A society spokesperson said: “This time Louise will take us on a journey from the beginning of the 19th century to its end, describing the reduction of pain, infection and death from surgery as the century progressed.

“She will tell of some of the problems that surgeons had to deal with and about the help which led to progress and the increase in the range of surgeries available.

“Despite innovations, however, many people never made it off the operating table. We will hear of the surgical and medical pioneers who often risked their own lives and reputations for the benefit of their patients and for the future advancement of their profession. Louise will bring a small selection of vintage surgical instruments from her own collection for us to see and will gladly answer questions about them.

“This promises to be another memorable afternoon of social and medical history and definitely not one to be missed.”

The Redditch History Society meets from 2pm until 4pm on the second Monday afternoon of each month.

Non-members are always welcome, for a £4 entrance fee and refreshments are available after the talk for just 50p per person.
