Redditch man frustrated with 'tree devastation' on Matchborough Way

Redditch Editorial 1st Mar, 2019   0

A REDDITCH man is upset with the ‘mess’ left behind by the borough council after hundreds of trees were cut down on Matchborough Way.

Jack Fussey was aware the project – which resulted in more than 100 trees being chopped down in January – was taking place, but says he was not ready for the ‘amount of devastation’.

Many of Redditch’s estimated three million trees are in areas where they were planted at the same time, during the ‘new town’ expansion.

It means the trees start to die off around the same age, which is why the council has decided to cut them down in bulk.

“When I was passing by on the bus I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said Jack, “And I could see all of the other passengers looking out the window thinking the same thing.

“It’s been weeks since the trees were cut down and I’ve still seen no sign of the council coming to clean up the mess they’ve left behind.

“I’m just really disappointed with the way it’s been handled.

“I expected it to look a lot better than it currently does.”

Members of Redditch Borough Council’s Woodland Management Team, who are dealing with the project, say Norway maple trees are already starting to colonise on the site.

They will continue to be encouraged to grow in order to promote the natural regeneration of the area.

Coun Brandon Clayton (Con, Astwood Bank), portfolio holder for environmental services, said: “We try to let people know when these projects are coming up because we understand nobody likes to see trees felled, especially if they don’t know the reason for it.

“But doing this remains an essential part of the ongoing work we do to try and maintain Redditch’s amazing woodlands.”
