Redditch misses out on £20 million levelling up fund for third time

REDDITCH has missed out on £20million of Government funding to revamp two run down community centres for the third time.

Redditch Borough Council applied to the Department of Levelling Up for the cash to develop the Winyates and Matchborough centres and create new homes, shops and open space for the community.

Residents and businesses have been informed of the changes and Council officers are being made available to answer any questions.

However, the original plan was met by protests from the community with shop owners dubious about the redevelopment.

They even started a petition which amassed 500 signatures.

Speaking to shoppers at both centres following the announcement, the overwhelming theme was one of relief.

One shop owner said: “I’m glad the bid was unsuccessful.

“It was worrying to have the threat of the centres being destroyed and replaced with God knows what.

“We welcome the buildings being repaired, new shop fronts and road re-surfacing but knocking buildings down is too far.

“I’d rather stick with the centre as the hub of the community, albeit worn down, than not have it at all.”

Council leader Matt Dormer said: “Whilst we are hugely disappointed by the news, This is not the end of the road and we will take some time now to with our architects to formulate a plan for both district centres.

“We will be ready for any future round of public funding and indeed we will continue to explore each and every option available

“I want to reassure Matchborough and Winyates residents that they will not be forgotten, and they continue to be a very important part of our plans to regenerate Redditch.”

Matchborough councillor, Coun Jane Spilsbury said: “I know that residents of Matchborough, and probably Winyates, will feel very let down by this.

“Business owners have put up with leaking roofs for too long.

“Residents have waited patiently for investment in their areas.

“They will feel that, yet again, this government has failed to invest in them and their surroundings. This has to change.

“The people of Matchborough and Winyates deserve better.”
