A REDDITCH mum of three has been shortlisted for a BBC Power of Sport Award after taking up running less than a year ago.

Helen Smith, from Brockhill, started running in January with the ambition of completing a Couch To 5K and losing some weight, and found that despite her initial shyness, it was an effective way to gain confidence and cope with recently developed anxiety.

The 37 year-old then joined Redditch’s Kingfisher Harriers whose Leader of Fitness, Dr Doug Richards, said: “Helen’s story is a fabulous example of how participation in sport can change someone’s life and as an England Athletics Mental Health Ambassador, I can vouch for the amazing transformation that Helen has gone through.

“I feel sure this is only the beginning as she looks for more challenges ahead.”

Helen, who now runs three to four times a week, said: “Through running I have gained a sense of pride in myself, confidence, and new friends. It has helped to bring a sparkle back I didn’t even know was missing.

“With three young children, life is very hectic, but my home life is now calmer because I am so much happier in myself.

“I have gone from being very isolated, lonely and unfit to happy, healthy and part of the great running community of Redditch. Who knew that taking that first terrifying step would lead me to change my life?”

Helen also said she would encourage others considering running to give it a go: “Just do it. Running has changed my life more than I can ever explain.”
